Classifying beer is like herding cats so the following categories have been used to provide a rough guide.
Gold – Light Blonde to gold in colour designed to be easy refreshing drinking without blowing your head off with hops. Gold beers tend to be at a sessionable strength between 3.5% and 4.5% ABV. Gold beers tend to be the first steps in to real ale particularly if you’re used to lagers. It is a good place to start if you are just starting out in to the world of real ale.
Pale Ales – These beers are also blonde to deep gold but tend to pack a bit more punch in hop flavours and strength – typically between 4.5% and 7.5% ABV. There has been a huge proliferation in pale ale styles from the traditional India Pale Ale (IPA) to the American styles that include West Coast IPA and New England IPA (NEIPA).
Browns – Brown Ales range in colour from light amber through to dark brown. They tend to be a bit sweeter with more of the flavours being contributed by a varied selection of malts. Traditional English Bitter, Best Bitter and Brown Ale fall in to this category making this selection ideal for those preferring traditional styles.
Dark – Rediscover the world of milds, stouts and porters with our dark selection. Dark beers tend to be dominated by roasted malt flavours and can range wildly in strength from sessionable milds through to strong Imperial Stouts that can be as strong as 10% ABV. Our dark beers contain roasted grains and are not gassed with Nitrogen so are more faithful to the tradition than proprietary dark beer.
